Katarina Wit began skating at five years old. Her talent soon became apparent and she was accepted to Karl-Marx-Stadt's school for special needs. Coach Jutta was also there. Witt finished second at the World Championships of Copenhagen in 1982. It was her first appearance. Following that, she started winning the competition with her elegance and grace. Olympic victory At Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the female bronze medal in figure skating after an extremely close contest. Four years later, that she was able to take home an even tighter race. The free skate she took was not a success, however her gold medal came from the performance she put at both mandatory figures (short program) and the compulsory figures. Witt became the first woman to win in both male and female figure skating since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating following her successes as a film actor. She took part in the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Although she did not win an award for gold, the young skater was a hit with the spectators. Witt got her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame, 1995.
